What is Painting?

Painting is the practice of applying pigments to a surface to create visual art. From cave paintings to contemporary abstracts, painting has been humanity's primary visual art form for millennia.

The beauty of painting lies in its versatility. You can work realistically or abstractly, on tiny canvases or massive murals. Each medium—oil, acrylic, watercolor—has its own personality and possibilities. Painting teaches you to see the world differently, to notice light, shadow, and the infinite variations of color around you.

History & Origins

Humans have painted for over 40,000 years, beginning with cave paintings in Indonesia and Europe. Throughout history, painting has served religious, political, and personal purposes—from Egyptian tomb art to Renaissance masterpieces to modern abstract expressionism.

Each era brought new techniques and philosophies: the sfumato of Leonardo, the bold colors of the Impressionists, the geometric abstraction of Cubism. Today's painters draw on this rich history while pushing boundaries in new directions.

What to Expect in a Painting Class

Beginner painting classes typically start with color theory and basic brushwork. You'll learn how colors interact, how to mix the hues you want, and how to apply paint with control.

Most classes provide easels, palettes, brushes, and paint—though you may want to bring an apron or wear old clothes. Sessions usually last 2-3 hours, giving you time to complete a simple project like a still life or landscape.

Don't worry about making "good" art right away. The goal is to experiment, learn the materials, and develop your eye. Many students find painting surprisingly relaxing once they let go of perfectionism.
